MEDIA WATCH: A Sane Voice Amidst a Cacophony of Ignorance

Amidst the din of ignorance responding to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, and Clause 14 (4) (9), there is a rather pleasant surprise. A sane voices that speaks with clarity, precision and understanding, that even many deafies, could do well to emulate. The voice belongs to the one, Dominic Lawson, a columnist from the UK broadsheet, The Independent. His article, Of course a deaf couple want a deaf child, is well worth a read. He gave short shrift to commonly held assumptions behind being deaf and hearing. More importantly though, he dignifies Deaf people as humans. Something which many hearing people still fail to do!

Then this one, another breath of fresh air, The Hearing’s Difficulties, by Cathy Heffernan, Deafie journalist with The Guardian.
